Lott W. Porter, 93 passed away Friday February 20, 2015 at ENMMU Center, comforted by his son, Willie W. Porter of Roswell. A graveside memorial has been scheduled for 10am Saturday, March 7, 2015 at South Park Cemetery for interment of ashes.
Lott was born in Dierks, Arkansas in 1921 to Rissie (James) and Willie B. Porter. He moved with his family to Oklahoma, Texas, then to Roswell, New Mexico (due to his father's tuberculosis) in 1932.
He attended grade school and RHS and joined the National Guard in 1939-1940. He then enlisted in the Air Corps on December 12 1941. He graduated from Missouri Aviation Institute where he was trained as an aeronautical mechanic working on all types of airplanes both military and civilian. He was assigned to the Third Ferrying Group, 19th Squadron, delivering airplanes to training fields.
When World War II was over, he remained in the United States Air Force as a career Airman, serving with distinction, at various overseas bases such as Puerto Rico, Korea, and two tours in Japan.
Lott retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of honorable service in 1962 and returned to Roswell. That same year, he married Nina P. Riviera, his bride for 40 years.
Lott continued his a career in mechanics working for the New Mexico State Highway Department for 20 years before finally retiring in 1984.
Lott was a lifetime member of the Air Force Association, Non Commissioned Officers (NCO) Association, Air Force Sergeants Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). In addition, he was a member of the Air Force Museum Foundation, the Antique Auto Club of America, and the Elks Lodge #969 of Roswell and a former member of the Kiwanis International.
Lott was preceded in death by his parents, Rissie and Willie, and his wife, Nina. Lott is survived by: his two sons, Jim Riviera and his wife, Catherine Burns of Houston, TX; Willie W. Porter and his wife Elizabeth of Roswell; grandchildren USAF Staff Sergeant Matthew Riviera, and his wife Jolene of Guam; Vicky Riviera and her mother, Linda Riviera, of League City, TX. ; Great-granddaughter, Sophia Riviera of Guam. One sister Margaret Phillips and her husband, Joe of Roswell; Four nieces Claudia Waide and her husband James, Joanne MacCallum and her husband John, Rissie Daubert and her husband Mitch, Meg Tidmore and her husband Ron all from Roswell. One nephew Ronald Phillips and Gretchen his wife, of Roswell.
