Wilma Faye Batie was born on May 31, 1919 in Jayton, Kent County, Texas to Lue Abel Batie and Clayborn W. Batie, and departed this earth on January 11, 2009 at 7:45 PM at the age of 89 years of age. Wilma was a fun-loving sibling of ten Batie children born and raised in the Kent County, Texas area: Warren, Luke, Toy, Dee, Agnus, Eva, Wilma, Madge, Martha Lou. Wilma was famous for her giggles and laughter. She met and married R.Lee Smith in 1938 and they had three children: Melvin Royal, Sandra Kaye, and Rickey Lee, who were the pride and joy of Wilmas life. Wilma met and married Alva Sonny Swinney in 1969 in Roswell and they shared the next 25 years singing and playing music at the Roswell Joy Center, attending church and enriching the lives of the Senior community, playing a mean hand of 42, and putting a little dance in the lives of their many friends and family. After Sonnys death, Wilma charmed and married Bill Max Reid, retired Fire Captain of the Roswell Fire Department, and they continued fun at the Joy Center, traveling to Ruidoso, and to San Antonio and Washington State to visit family. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, all nine brothers sisters, and her first grandson Erick Lee Smith. She is survived by her three children, four Smith grandsons: Scott, Allen, Jonathan, and Christopher, and her only granddaughter Kirsten Smith. Services for Wilma are Wednesday, January 14, at 1:30 PM under the direction of Ballard Funeral Home with internment at Memory Lawn Memorial Park.
