On Wednesday, August 28, 2013, our beloved Veronica Betty Chavez, 95, of Roswell, NM passed on to be with our Heavenly Father surrounded by her children. Betty was born June 28, 1918 in Arabela, NM to Amarante and Rebecca Lucero. She married Melchor Mike Chavez on June 23, 1945. Shortly after they moved to Roswell where they lived and raised their family. Betty and Mike were parents to six children Teresa Chavez, Lorenzo Chavez and wife Sandra, Cecilia Chavez, Arsilia Alvarez and husband Amador, Lorena Ortega and husband Ernest and Mary Ann Chavez all of Roswell. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren: Veronica DuranHernandez, Craig Duran, Michael Chavez, Melanie ChavezNelson, Maryann Saenz, Jill Copeland, Arthur Alvarez, Abran Alvarez, Andrea Baca, Gabriel Ortega, Adam Ortega, and Roman Ortega. She was also blessed with 26 greatgrandchildren and four greatgreat granddaughters.
Betty was a homemaker for the majority of her life raising five successful children who are strong in their faith. She had a loving hand in raising all of her grandchildren. Betty enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, cooking, baking, gardening and sharing the company of anyone on her front porch. In her later years Betty liked passing the time by reciting the Rosary and praying for her family. Betty treasured having her entire family around her in her home, not only for major holidays, but any occasion. For many years she would prepare Sunday lunch for her family until her health no longer allowed. Betty will be dearly missed by five generations.
Betty is also survived by a sister Elena Trujillo and brothers: Aristeo, Elon and Gliserio Sonny Lucero. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband Melchor, her daughter, Mary Ann Chavez, greatgrandson, Jonathan Hernandez, sisters: Lucila Fresquez, Soyla Bell and Noyola Saavedra, brothers: Belson Lucero, Graciano, Valois and Eloy Candelaria.
A rosary will be recited at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church on Saturday, August 31 at 9am with Mass of the Resurrection immediately following with Father Joe Pacquing officiating. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery. Bettys grandchildren will serve as pallbearers with her greatgrandchildren serving as honorary pallbearers.
