A funeral mass is scheduled for 12:10 pm, Thursday, May 26, 2011at Assumption Catholic Church for Teresa Elizabeth Mayer 107, who passed away Monday, May 23, 2011at Mission Arch Care Center. Father Bill McCann will officiate. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery.
Teresa was born in Dyersville, Iowa on February 24, 1904 to Francis X. Mayer of Iowa City, Iowa and Elizabeth Schroeder Mayer of Dyersville, Iowa. Her parents preceded her in death. Her father bought and sold property all over the Midwest. He bought a Hotel in McGreggor Iowa. As a young woman Teresa went to manage the Hotel for her father. It was called the Scenic Hotel and it was on the Mississippi River, there was a lot of river traffic in those days. When her father sold the Hotel she moved to Chicago to work for the telephone company for a few years but she decided to come back to Iowa, so for a few years she was a housekeeper for the priest. Teresa decided that was not for her either so she moved to Minnesota where her sister Hilda Wingert lived and she went to college at St Cloud School of Teaching. There she received her teaching degree. Teresa then taught at several schools in Minnesota, often they were little country school. She enjoyed teaching and that was her career until she retired. Teresa never married. When she retired she moved to Roswell, New Mexico where her sister Hilda and Charlie Wingert had retired. She moved to Roswell in 1976 and has spent the rest of her life here. She has one living sister Anne Mayer, she is a Sister of Notre Dame and resides in Chicago, Illinois. Teresa was also preceded in death by her sisters, Walburga Mayer, Hilda Wingert, Margaret Tegler and Isabel Tauer her two older brothers, Anthony Mayer and Msgr. John Mayer.
