Steve R. Nunez, 82 of Roswell passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017, surrounded by his family. Steve was born October 4, 1934 to Esteban and Caridad Marina Nunez of Palma Soriano Oriente, Cuba who preceded him in death, along with his wife Frances of Roswell, brothers,
Saul Nunez, Noel Nunez and Emilio Nunez, all of Miami Florida.
Steve is survived by his children: Carolyn (Doug) of Wickenburg, AZ, Steve (DeeAnn) Nunez, Jim Nunez, Mary Faith Nunez, Flori Jo Nunez of Roswell, Sisters Dulce Moreno, Tereza ( Tete) Gonzalez and Gisela Puig of Miami Florida, in- laws, Bob, George and Jim Valdez of Roswell
and Flo Valdez of El Paso, TX along with 10 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was born in Cuba, where his love of baseball began. He had a great arm, and stick that brought him to the attention of the Washington Senators franchise. He was drafted and started his baseball career in the Class C Longhorn League, where he played for the
Roswell Rockets. During his pitching days, he had the honor of pitching against Joe Dimaggio and played with Joe Bauman, who made the Roswell Rockets famous for his amazing home run record (72) in 1954. It was during this time that he met and fell in love with
Frances Valdez. Steve frequented The Valdez Café, not only for the green chile stew, but also for the beautiful waitress that captured his attention. They married August 31, 1957 and celebrated 50 years together, before Fran passed away in Sept. of 2007.
Steve and Fran traveled to Cuba and many different ballfields, until Steve's career ended in 1958. Steve became a United States citizen in 1963 and was very proud to be an American. After baseball, Steve worked for Mays Lumber Company, Southwest Distributing Company,
Miller Distributing Company and R.I.S.D. Steve loved baseball and eventually coached his sons, from the Pee Wee league all the way through the Majors. He also, spent hours on the road and on the ball field, watching his grandson, Christopher through his baseball career.
Steve was also an avid golfer. He became a scratch golfer with six holes in one.
Steve will always be remembered for his joy for life and his engaging smile.
A memorial service in his honor is planned for, Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Ballard Funeral Home Chapel.
