Sharon Winn Scott
Sharon Winn Scott died peacefully in her sleep on August 31, 2024, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A resident of Roswell for nearly seventy years, she leaves behind a large family over which she was the beloved matriarch.
Sharon was born January 5, 1935, as the youngest of the five children of parents Kathryn Ellison Winn and Nat Warren Winn, who instilled in their children the value of hard work. Sharon treasured and loved to tell the stories of growing up on the family farm in Weleetka, Oklahoma. Sharon was salutatorian of her 1953 high school graduating class: beating out her lifelong best friend Virginia Philippe Broach by one point. She then attended the University of Oklahoma, majoring in English. At OU, she was working as a part-time secretary at the Geology department when she met the love of her life: George Loyd Scott, Jr. They married in 1955 and moved to Roswell where George initially worked for Humble Oil while they started a family and had five children over eleven years. In 1964, when Humble Oil moved from Roswell, Sharon was an integral part of their making the decision to stay in Roswell and start their own oil and gas exploration company. Initially to help make ends meet, Sharon taught school as a substitute teacher at Roswell High and ran an early morning paper route with her sons Warren and George. As the business began to flourish, Sharon took over the accounting and business of the company. She became very proficient at tax accounting, which she continued to do for the rest of her life, both for herself and later with her family’s companies. She had an amazing and exemplary work ethic, literally working up to the end of her last week. And she enjoyed work. But while she worked, she always took time (often several hours a day) to talk with her friends, kids, grandkids, nephews and nieces. That was what she really enjoyed. She was a great listener, and had a great sense of humor, but she also imparted a lot of wisdom and shared a lot of joy and laughter.
Sharon was a devoted Christian. She accepted Jesus as a young girl, but was too shy, so her Mom held her hand and walked her down to the altar. She and George raised their family at the First Christian Church in Roswell. After George passed away in 2003, she became a member at Christ’s Church in Roswell. Her special gift was in service to others, and in her generosity, which she always did anonymously. Among other things, she was proud to support Gateway Christian School and their students. Sharon was also an amazing storyteller and voracious reader. For over fifty years she was a member of the El Sombrero Story League and made lifelong friends. She also helped teach young ladies the art of storytelling in Junior Story League. Around the family, her unique and sometimes scary bedtime stories have been passed on to her kids, grandkids, and their friends, hopefully to continue down for generations. She also shared with her family the love of reading, always willing to share, trade or discuss a good book. Her love of reading and keeping up with current events and politics made her an amazing person to talk with.
Sharon was an amazing grandparent. She rarely missed an event and would travel hours to watch a grandkid play volleyball, football or a basketball game. As the grandkids got older, she would speak with the kids weekly, or send a note, or a book. Her grandkids valued her wisdom and did not want to disappoint her. She was thrilled to have ‘perfect’ grandchildren who were never at fault in her eyes, and she was masterful at convincing each of them that they were her favorite. In fact, Sharon had a gift for making everyone feel that way, because she was a very special and lovely person.
Sharon is preceded in death by her husband George Loyd Scott, Jr. her parents, her siblings Mintaetta Cardwell Stocker, Francis and Nancy Winn, Johnny and Wilda Winn, Bane and Wilma Winn Bigbie; her grandson Jonathan Winn Scott, and her granddaughter Madelyn Grace Worrall.
Sharon is survived by her five children, sixteen grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren: oldest daughter Synda (Scott) and Sealy Cavin and their children Shazalynn (Cavin) and Brandon Winfrey (great grandchildren Grace and Cavin Reed); Hutch and Melissa Cavin (great grandchildren Liam, Aile, Hutch and Naromi); Ross and Erin Cavin (great grandchildren Brechin, Finnegan and Jean Myles), and Kaitlinn Cavin; son George Scott, III, and children George Scott IV and Jeff Beck, Jennifer Scott and Michael Jameson (great grandchildren Ella, MJ and Hunter), Jeff and Michele Scott (great grandsons Travis and Troy), and Warren and Bella Scott; son Warren and Lisa Scott and granddaughters Lillian and Sophia; daughter Susan Scott Murphy and granddaughter Haley Winn Murphy and Russell S. Warren III (great grandson Russell S. Murphy-Warren IV), and granddaughter Meredith and Zachary Irons; and daughter Lori (Scott) and John Worrall, and grandchildren Kathryn (Worrall) and Grant Bauley, Elizabeth (Worrall) and Juan Antonio Solis Jr.; John Worrall IV, and Isabel Worrall.
Sharon is further survived by her nieces and nephews Mel Winn, Steve Winn, David Winn, Carol Winn Dunnaway, Becky Minkel, Susan Hildebrand, Candy Delleney, Debbie Grimes, Bane Bigbie Jr., Rocky Bigbie, Stacey Woodroof, Kathy Trent, and their families. She was the last surviving member of her siblings, and she had a special relationship with them and their families.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Reynaldo Martinez, and Dr. Tom Wulf and Dawn Wulf, NP. Your support and care for Sharon has been tremendous and is very much appreciated.
On Saturday, September 7, 2024 there will be a private family burial service followed by a celebration of Sharon’s life at 11 AM at Christ’s Church at 2200 Sycamore Avenue in Roswell, New Mexico. Pallbearers will be her six grandsons, George Scott IV, Jeff Scott, Warren Scott, Hutch Cavin, Ross Cavin and Johnny Worrall. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandson-in-laws Grant Bauley, Jeff Beck, Zachary Irons, Juan Antonio Solis, Jr., and Russell Warren III. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Gateway Christian School Scholarship Fund, at 1900 Sycamore Avenue, Roswell NM 88201, or Christ’s Church at 2200 Sycamore Avenue, Roswell, NM 88201.
While we will miss her humor, stories, back scratches, and love, the family takes comfort in knowing she is rejoicing in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She leaves behind a legacy of love and faith. Sharon’s favorite verse is from Hebrews 13:2 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares”.
