Sam Sherman
Sam Sherman, an authentic American cowboy in every way, left this earth January 2, 2009. Born on a ranch near Seagraves, Texas, on February 15, 1920, Sam learned a love of the outdoors that never left him. In 1930, Sam moved to Roswell, New Mexico, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Sam was a member of the United States Army during WWII, serving from 1940 until 1945, primarily in Europe. During that time, he married the absolute love of his life, Wilma Meairs, on February 8, 1942. After leaving the Army, Sam worked for Bogle Farms, Butler Buildings, and finally Diamond A Cattle Company, where he spent 25 years. Across thousands of acres of ranchland in New Mexico, Texas and Colorado are windmill towers, water tanks, hay barns and corrals that Sam constructed. After retirement, Sam piloted Wilma around the country in their motor home; they vacationed in Alaska and Hawaii and spent substantial time at their beloved lake cabin in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Wilma preceded Sam to Heavens Big Roundup in 2004. Sam is survived by two daughters, Alesta Sherman, living in California, and Lina Daniel, living in Kansas, as well as six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Viewing will be Tuesday, January 6, at Ballard Funeral Home. Graveside service at South Park Cemetery Wednesday, January 7, at 10:00am.
