Robert Whitehead

Robert Gail Whitehead, of Roswell, NM, age 85 passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2014. Services will be held at Ballard Funeral Chapel, on Friday, November 7, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Viewing will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2014 from 4:00 6:00 p.m. at Ballard Funeral Home.

R.G. Gail is survived by his wife, Grace, four children, eleven grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren. Also, he is survived by three brothers. There are many others who are his spiritual sons and daughters. Gail and Grace were married July 2, 1950, in Portales, New Mexico.

Gail was born in a farmhouse between Lawton and Faxon, OK in 1929. His family moved to Roswell in 1942 and began farming here. Gail graduated from Roswell High School in 1946 and from ENMU Portales in 1950. Gail felt the call to preach during his second year in college. After graduating from college, he attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth and graduated with a Master of Divinity in 1955.

Gail pastored nine different churches in three different states. Of those nine churches, he started five of them. He became the Associational Director of Missions of Estrella Baptist Association in Phoenix, AZ. In 1982, Gail and Grace were appointed as Home Missionaries of the Southern Baptist Convention.

In lieu of flowers, R.G. Gail requested that all memorial gifts be given to SBC missions causes in China and Hawaii to be designated through Edgewood Community Church, P.O. Box 8296, Roswell, NM 882028296.
