A rosary is scheduled for 9:30 A.M. with a mass at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church for Rita A. Gallagher, 89, who passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Mission Arch Care Center. The mass will be celebrated by Father Josh Duplissey of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. A meal will be served at the church directly following the mass in the Parish Hall.
Rita was born on September 12, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward Gallagher and Mary Cowhey Gallagher. Both have preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her brother Owen Gallagher, sisters Catherine Gallagher, Mabel Gallagher and Mary Gallagher. Those left to cherish her memory are her many nieces and nephews.
Rita was a nun at the Sisters of Mercy for 28 years in Chicago. She earned a masters degree in Education. Rita went to the Mescalero Reservation and taught for six years then moved to Roswell and taught reading. She tutored and had great success with a special reading program that raised her students reading levels. Rita was a resident of Roswell since 1976 and a member of the choir with Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, CCD and active in Altar Rosary Society. She took great pride in the making of the Altar Cloths and setting them up. Rita also enjoyed music and had a song for anything and everything.
