Loyd Rex Smith passed away at his home in Roswell on February 25, 2017, just six months after the death of his wife of sixty-seven years, LaVerne Smith. Rex was born on May 1, 1928 in Wingate, Texas to Naomi Wells Smith and Charles Albert Smith. His twin brother, Ray Smith, lives in Hobbs, New Mexico. Another brother, Charles, is deceased.
Rex received a degree in business from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. In 1959, he and LaVerne moved to Roswell from Clovis, New Mexico to found the Colony House, a Roswell landmark for more than 50 years.
An active member of First Baptist Church, Rex played a key role, with LaVerne, in restoring and re-purposing stained glass windows that had been stored away when the church moved to its new building.
Rex loved his dogs, buying and selling antiques, and growing houseplants on his patio.
Rex is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and MaryLou Mohon Smith of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Charles and Julie Shackelford Smith of Mount Pleasant, Texas. Two grandchildren are Laurel Smith of Fort Collins, and Matthew Smith of Greenville, South Carolina. Matthew and his wife Amy Hall Smith are parents of Rex and LaVerne's three great grandchildren-Brighton, Levi, and Lucy.
Services will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 11 am, at Ballard Funeral Home in Roswell.
