Ray Mitcham of Roswell, New Mexico died on September 4, 2013 in Roswell, NM from complications of prostate and bone cancer. Ray, or Pops as he was known to his grandchildren, was born in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Jack Mitcham and Francis Lanford Mitcham, and brother of Mary Francis Boyd. He grew up in Fort Worth, TX before moving to Lubbock, TX to pursue his higher education at Texas Tech University. At Texas Tech, Ray was a varsity letterman from 1953 1955 and was part of the victorious 1954 Gator Bowl team. Ray received his degree from the School of Architecture and graduated with honors in 1955. He founded the architectural firm Ray Mitcham and Associates. Some of his notable designs were the New Mexico Military Institute Chapel, the Roswell Airport Terminal, Sunset Villa Nursing Home, as well as many other buildings and homes throughout New Mexico.
Ray had many achievements throughout his life, and was a leader in the Roswell community. He served on the school board from 19701976, and was President of the school board from 19721976, was an elder at both First Presbyterian Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church, was a Freemason, and a member of the American Institute of Architects. Additionally, Ray was a fixture at Berrendo Middle School and Goddard High School sporting events supporting his children in the rain, sun, sleet, and wind from 19681981.
On April 5, 1953, Ray married the love of his life, Patti Harris Mitcham. In 1960, Ray and Patti moved to Roswell, New Mexico. Together they had six children. Throughout their marriage, the devotion of Ray and Patti never wavered. In April 2013, Ray and Patti celebrated 60 years of marriage with their children and grandchildren. Ray and Patti were soul mates, and their love was visible to all of those who were in their presence.
He is preceded in death by his son Matt Mitcham and his sister Mary Francis Boyd. Ray is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patti his two sons, David Mark and his wife, Sue Raby Mitcham three daughters, Melinda Mitcham Creamer, Margaret Mitcham and her partner, Nicole Franco Millicent McLane and her husband, Dave McLane. Other survivors are his four grandchildren: Matthew Crosby Mitcham, MeLisa Ray Creamer, Michaela Patti Creamer, and Katie Nicole Franco greatgranddaughter Olivia Ann Alkire and his nephew Andy Boyd.
A celebration of Rays life will be held Wednesday September 11, 2013 at the Anderson Museum, 409 East College Blvd., from 2PM4PM.
