Pete Mattlage
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 29, 2006 at Grace Community Church for Pete Mattlage, age 78, who passed away December 25, 2006 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Rick Hale will officiate. Private family burial will be conducted at South Park Cemetery.
Pete was born on April 21, 1928 to Henry and Mary Mattlage in Crawford, TX. He was the youngest of eleven children. His parents precede him in death as well as five brothers and four sisters.
Pete married Genevieve Taylor on June 23, 1953 in Quanah, TX. His wife preceded him in death on Thanksgiving Day 1986.
Pete was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict and he was proud of being a Charter Member of Grace Community Church.
Pete was a well respected coach having a great passion for football in Roswell. He transformed losing football programs into city championship titles year after year at Yucca and Mesa Junior High Schools. He touched the lives of young boys as he coached with discipline, love and care. Many of his former players have achieved successful and rewarding careers because of his influence.
Following his retirement in 1984 he enjoyed his daily outings with his 6:00 am golfing buddies, listening to country music, playing the stock market and horse racing. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends and he most loved the times he spent with his children and grandchildren.
Pete was proud of his German heritage, that he was from Crawford, Texas and that his familys home place is a neighbor to President Bushs residence.
Pete was well loved by all that knew him and always greeted everyone with a smile and a friendly word. On Christmas day Pete received the greatest gift of all, being in the presence of God and reunited with his sweetheart, Genevieve
He is survived by his son: Dr. Glenn Mattlage and wife Tina of Roswell, NM; his daughter: Dr. Carol Herrington and husband Jim of Palestine, TX; his sister: Dorothy Bankston of Lawrenceville, GA; his grandchildren: Meredith and Aaron Mattlage and Brent Herrington.
