Pedro Melendez

Pedro (Pete) Lorenzo Melendez 96, a retired elder from the United States Air Force, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was born to parents Regino Melendez and Remedios Marrufo on June 29, 1927, in Deming, New Mexico.

Having devoted 20 years to military service, Pedro was a decorated veteran who received accolades such as the Army Good Conduct Medal and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. His tenure included service with the 1st Special Operations Wing.

Pedro was known for his exceptional ability to motivate others, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He possessed a delightful sense of humor coupled with a hint of sarcasm that endeared him to many.

He is preceded in death by his wife Joan N Cox Melendez, father Regino Melendez, mother Remedios Marrufo, brothers, Luis Marrufo, and Daniel Marrufo.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory are son Miguel Melendez, daughters, Irene Calderon and husband Joe of Hobbs, New Mexico, Dolores Remington and husband Mark of Ruidoso, New Mexico, Grandchildren; Nathaniel Calderon of Denver, Colorado, Tamara Jones and husband Justin of Roswell New Mexico, Chandra Miramontes and husband Arturo of Roswell New Mexico. Great- Grandchildren; Johnny Lopez and wife Alizia, Joanna Leon, Anthony Jones, Grayson Jones, Carmen Leon, Cristina Leon. Great Great Grandchild Eustolia Miramontes all from Roswell, New Mexico, and a niece and numerous nephews.

Pallbearers; Nathaniel Calderon, Arturo Miramontes, Grayson Jones, Justin Jones, Johnny Lopez, and Anthony Jones. Honorary Pallbearers; Joanna Leon, Carmen Leon, and Cristina Leon.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2024, starting at 2:00 PM at Ballard Funeral Home in Roswell, NM, followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, April 26, 2024 at South Park Cemetery.

Pedro's legacy lives on through the cherished memories he created with his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
