Mary Deborde

May 15, 1924 — September 12, 2015

Mary Magdalene (Schmid) DeBorde was 91 when she passed away at her home on Saturday, September 12, 2015 with her loving family around her.

Mary was born on May 15, 1924 to Jacob Schmid and Anna Martin Schmid in Roswell New Mexico at Saint Mary's Hospital. She was raised along the Berrendo River on a productive family farm, raising crops, livestock, and bees. Mary had plenty of company growing up with nine brothers and sisters. There she enjoyed the early days of Roswell and some of the exciting events that occurred at that time. For example, living down the road from Dr. Robert Goddard allowed her to see and hear the new and amazing sights and sounds that his inventions produced. Mary always enjoyed the family life, horseback riding as well as swimming along the Berrendo. Many stories were told about the fun and hardships of growing up in an area that was hindered by the harsh flooding evident of the period.

After graduating from Roswell High School in 1942, she along with many other devoted American women ventured to California where she worked for a year as "Rosie the Riveter". To this day she felt a sense of pride for giving a part of her to the military. Mary then returned to Roswell where she was able to pursue her love of motorcycles. With countless stories of motorcycle adventures, she worked at Sears and Roebucks for several years. Mary at this time met and married another motorcycle enthusiast, L.D. (Pete) DeBorde in 1950. They were able to ride and work together for a countless number of years and enjoyed a wonderful 63 year marriage until Pete's passing in 2014.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, Jacob Schmid and her mother, Anna Martin Schmid. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: Heine Schimd, Hans Schmid, Roy Schmid, and Charles Schmid; her sisters: Helen (Schmid) Marshall and Elizabeth Ann Schmid.

Mary is survived by her son David DeBorde of Roswell, her grandson Dominic DeBorde of Roswell and her granddaughter Stephanie DeBorde of Colorado Springs. Mary is also survived by her brother Herbert Schmid of Roswell, her sisters: Virginia (Schmid) Brewer, and Marcine (Schmid) McDaniel and her husband Clayton McDaniel of Roswell; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A very special thank you is sent out to Mary's niece and her husband, Wanda and Jerry Silver of Albuquerque. These two along with Herbert, Virgina, and Marcine enjoyed a very long tradition of a weekly family lunch. Wanda and Jerry would take Mary on the weekly adventure trip which was anything from Bitter Lakes to Ruidoso. Another special thank you is sent out to her long time, loyal, and amazing friend Mary Jo McGrath. These two would venture the countryside for garage sales and art shows: ending the day at their favorite Mexican food restaurant. A more loving and loyal friend could not be found and a mere thank you to Mary Jo will never be enough.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wanda and Jerry Silver, Bill and Bobby Brewer, Mary Jo McGrath and Dominic DeBorde.

A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, September 18 at South Park Cemetery at 11:00am. Mary was a lifelong member of Saint Peters Catholic Church, volunteered with many organizations, involved with the church, as well as a member of "Right to Life". Father Charlie Martinez from Saint Peters Catholic Church will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Mary's memory be honored with contributions to the Roswell Assurance Home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Ballard Funeral Home with a loving thanks to Larry Stiles and Rodney Eakin. An online registry can be accessed at www.ballardfuneralhome.com.

Although you're gone, I'm not alone
and never shall I be.
For the precious memories of the bond we shared
will never depart from me.
Our love surpassed the ups and downs,
and helped us along the way.
And that same love will give me strength,
to manage this loss each day.
On my mind and in my heart
Mom, you shall forever be,
For just as much as I am a part of you,
You are a part of me!
