Margaret McCollister
Roswell resident Margaret McCollister passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2007. She was born Mary Margaret McNeal in 1917 in Craig County, Oklahoma to Walter and Pearl Pickett McNeal. The family moved to Edna, Kansas where Walter ran the local granary.
Margaret attended two years of community college in Coffeyville, Kansas, while living with her Uncle John Pickett and his family and working in his general store. After obtaining her teaching certificate she taught for two years in the one room schoolhouse that she herself had attended as a girl in Edna.
Margaret then attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas graduating with a bachelors degree in Business Administration in 1942. She was married to Donald D. McCollister from Pittsburg, Kansas from 1942 until 1963, being a homemaker and residing in Midland, Michigan during those years. She was an accomplished seamstress.
Margaret returned to teaching and resided in Flint, Michigan until her retirement to Roswell in 1980 to be near to her sister Ruth Sherman. She was an avid bridge player, a member of Senior Circle and the New Comers Club, and attended trinity Methodist Church. For several years she taught English as a Second Language as a volunteer in Roswell.
She is survived by her son Roger McCollister of Lawrence, Kansas; a daughter and son-in-law Carol McCollister and John Wyek of San Rafael, California; daughter Janet McCollister of Manteca, California; granddaughter Meghan Mccollister; grandson Michael McCollister; sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Edd Sherman of Roswell; nephew and niece Robert and Kathleen Sherman of Roswell; and niece Ann Sherman Cooper of Mocksville, North Carolina.
A memorial service will be held at Ballard Funeral Home on South Main at 11:00 a.m. Saturday May 5, 2007.
