Leon M. Miller
A service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 10, 2008 at First Church of the Nazarene for Leon M Miller, 92, Of Roswell who passed away at his home on March 3, 2008. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery. Rev. Garth Hyde of the First Church of the Nazarene will officiate.
Leon was born on October 28, 1915 to John and Margaret Miller in Hollis, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of eight children 3 brothers and 4 sisters they have preceded him in death as well as his parents.
Leon grew up on his family farm where they grew cotton, alfalfa, maize and wheat. He graduated from High School in Hollis, Oklahoma and was outstanding football player. He left home at the age of 17 and went to Colorado to work various jobs to earn money to go to school. He then attended North Texas AM majoring in Agriculture.
Before he was able to finish school World War II broke out and he entered the Coast Guard in October of 1942. He served on the U.S.S. Arthur Middleton Assault Transport. In January of 1945 he was wounded by a Japanese Plane and spent the rest of his service time in the hospital. He received his discharge in November of 1945. Leon was also awarded a Purple Heart award.
After leaving the Military he worked at several different occupations including a Chicken farm in Arkansas, later as a brick layer contractor in Amarillo, TX and then a remodeling business. He then retired and moved to Roswell, NM approximately 30 years ago.
Leons first wife Kathleen passed away and was laid to rest in South Park Cemetery. He then met Wynon Armstrong at the Senior Citizens Center and they were married on June 5 1993 in Roswell. Leon had no children of his own but had become a much loved step dad and grandfather papa as all the grandkids called him.
Leon is survived by his wife Wynon Armstrong Miller of the family home; his four step sons: Leslie Armstrong and wife Glenda of Ft. Sumner, NM, Wayne Armstrong of Roswell, Marty Armstrong and wife Kayla of Roswell and Chet Armstrong and wife Todie of Hagerman; as well as five grand sons, five granddaughters, one great grandsons and three great granddaughters, and two grand son in laws; and numerous nieces and nephews. All of whom will think of him with fond memories.
