Leo "Freddie" Gonzales was born on March 30, 1941 to Phyllis Gonzales and was raised by his mother and step-father Ramon Barrera.
Leo served in the National Guard as a communication specialist (Wireman), from 1964 to 1969, Honorable Discharge. He went to work in Sanger, Texas in a mobile home factory in the early 70's. Leo then went to work for TMC Bus Company for 20 years until the company became Nova Bus, and continued to work there until the company closed its doors 12 years later. Retired for a short while, he was hired at Sam's Club as a door greeter, becoming known as "The little grey haired man". The children loved going to Sam's knowing as they were leaving he would draw happy faces on the receipts. Leo took pride in working at Sam's Club, and looked forward to going to work. He was part of the Sam's Club family for 10 years. Leo was a simple man, who loved to read the newspaper every morning with his cup of coffee. "Freddie's interest included watching the Dallas Cowboys and old westerns with a cold beer. He loved to draw and tell his life stories to his children and grandchildren. Leo married Connie Reyer, they celebrated their 50th anniversary on March 11, 2016. "Freddie" was a humble and noble man and a great father.
Leo was preceded in death by his son, Donald Gonzales; stepfather, Ramon Barrera; sisters, Cruizita Watts and Rosie Gonzales. Those to carry on his memory include his wife, Connie Gonzales; mother, Phyllis Barrera; his three sons, Alfred and wife, Carla Gonzales; Ramon Gonzales and Victor Guerro and Michael and his wife, Victoria Gonzales, and his granddaughter, Taelor. Also, his nine grandchildren, Frankie, Rebecca, Donald, Jessica, Donna, Crystal, Anhelica, Michael Jr., and Desarae, along with 14 great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers are Donald Gonzales, Frankie Gonzales, Michael Gonzales Jr., and Patrick Lopez.
Honorary pallbearers are his sons, Alfred Gonzales, Ramon Gonzales, and Michael Gonzales Sr.
A rosary will be recited for Leo "Freddie" Gonzales at 9:30 am on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at St. Peter Catholic Church with a mass of resurrection following at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at General McBride Veterans Cemetery with Roswell Veteran's Honor Guard conducting graveside services. The family will be receiving visitors at 2511 Park Drive.
