Julia G. Harris, 83, of Roswell, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2016. She will be laid to rest with her husband Major Byron D. Harris, USA, DVM, at the Fort Stanton National Cemetery during a private graveside service.
Julia was born June 19, 1933, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Angelo and Saladine Ramis Garcia. She married Byron D. Harris February 18, 1950 and had two children, William R. "Bob" Harris and Linda Gail Espinoza. Julia was a full time homemaker. While stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, her favorite pastime was traveling with her husband and square dancing all over the world, especially in London, Paris and Brussels. She really enjoyed giving Europeans a little taste of Southern square dancing. She also enjoyed her frequent trips to Las Vegas and other local casinos. Julia was a very strong supporter of her son's athletic career by traveling to all home and out of town games and all her daughter's activities as well.
Julia moved to Roswell with her family on July 4, 1966 from Dallas, Texas. She remained in Roswell with her husband until the closing of the Glover Meat Packing plant where her husband was the senior USDA food inspector for the State of New Mexico. Upon the closure of Glover's, she and her husband transferred to Amarillo, Texas for approximately 18 months. She and her Husband then retired to El Paso. Julia returned to Roswell March 2002 following the death of her husband.
Julia is survived by her son Bob of Roswell and her daughter Linda also of Roswell, four grandchildren, Melanie Wanae Harris, of Midland, Texas, Aimee Espinoza, Devin Espinoza of Roswell, and Aaron Espinoza, of Las Cruces, and two great grandchildren, Elythia and Jathan Barreto, of Roswell. Julia is also survived by her sister Josephine Garcia, of Youngstown, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her husband Byron D. Harris, parents Angelo and Saladine Garcia, formerly of Youngstown, Ohio and a great grandson Jalen Decoi Harris of Roswell.
Julia will be remembered at a private family ceremony. Donations may be made in Julia's name to the Roswell Humane Society, 703 E. McGaffey, Roswell NM 88203.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Maria Olivas and Cathy Green for their special and loving service over the past five years. Also, special thanks to Frances, Alma, Rosalyn, Margarita, and Pastor Tim Arlet of Gentiva Hospice and the rest of Gentiva's staff who showed her so much kindness. The family would also like to thank the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center ICU staff for their excellent care and service as well. Additionally, special thanks goes out to Charles Shannon and his staff at Primm Drug.
