Joseph Weldon Odell
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Monday, August 15, 2011 at Ballard Funeral Home Chapel for Joseph Weldon Odell 89, who passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Covenant Lakeside Hospital in Lubbock, TX. Pastor Richard Grisham of Bethel Baptist Church will officiate. Roswell Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military graveside service at South Park Cemetery.
Joseph was born March 15, 1922 in Crowell, Texas to William Washington and Sarah Gertie Bowers Odell. His parents preceded him in death. Joseph is also preceded in death by two sisters, Nonie Porter and Virgie Tanner and three brothers, Chester, Johnnie and Paul Odell.
Joseph is survived by his dance partner and companion Mary Wood of Roswell sons Jimmy Lee Odell of Arlington, TX, Richard Don Odell and wife Ronda of Wylie, TX, Harold Wayne Odell and companion Shelia of Weatherford, TX and Robert Earl Odell and wife Terri of Roswell daughters Barbara Lue Martin and husband Jack of Mesquite, TX and Shirley Ann Longmore and husband Bob of Bradenton, FL sisters Gladys Muskof of Texas, Vinnie Gay Smith of Colorado, Thelma Freman of Columbia, SC and Eva Mae Swift of Colorado the mother of his children Nelda Fay Odell of Roswell and very special cousin Vina Brisco of Roswell.
Joseph has lived in Roswell since 1936 coming from Texas. He served our country during WWII as a medic in the United States Army. Joseph was a heavy machinery operator for the government and a member of New Mexico Old Time Fiddlers Association. His hobby was raising exotic birds and he was also a beekeeper.
