Jose "Manzo" Lara was called to his heavenly home on Saturday July 15, 2017 in Reeves County, Texas at the age of 49. Jose was born to Manuel Felipe Lara Torres and Alberta Cordero Herrera on March 18, 1968 in Municipal La Cruz, Chihuahua, Mexico; both of his parents have preceded him in death.
Jose was best described in one word as a child, "mischievous". He had his little hands into everything and was a lover of the rough and tumble, dirt and mud, and growing up on a ranch provided all of this to him. His father was the ranch foreman which provided Jose with the opportunity to ride horses and experience the cowboy life first hand. During this time his father played a critical role in teaching and shaping Jose into the eventual man who would support his family, not just monetarily, but in the important role of a caring provider and a pillar of security.
At an early age, Jose began working in the oil fields, continuing this profession when he moved to the USA in 1988. The mechanisms of machinery used to extract the fossil fuels from deep below fascinated him. During his years of working in the oil patch, he grew in his job, learning the skills and earning the respect of his peers. Jose had earned the right to manage his own oil rig and crew for United Drilling Inc. He became a role model to many and never let impatience dictate quality. Every component of the machines and every man on the ground mattered. He believed that all deserved the right to learn their potential and deserved to work in a place of respect.
During his short periods of free time, Jose loved to hit the casino with his wife, which in truth is not that different than the ranch. A rough and tumble place with grit and smoke, he liked the excitement of the games. He enjoyed sitting in his truck, sometimes for hours, just listening to music and talking on the phone with family and friends. Jose had a special friend that he tried to spend as much time as possible with, his beloved dog Hugo.
Jose had a beautiful family which he began when he met the love of his life Audrey in April 1989. The two had met at a dance and Jose didn't waste any time with his pursuit. Within a year, he married Audrey, and the two began their life together. He loved his sweet daughter Sandra who became the first person to control his heart strings and his son Javier who was the embodiment of himself. Jose had learned through example from his own father about the importance of loving your family and working hard to support them. His love was unconditional; he refused judgement, and withheld grudges from all. His approach to people was to help in any way possible, be it time or money, but these things came from a humbled heart. He never advertised what he had done and treated his in-laws like they were his own parents and siblings. These gifts of compassion are more than learned behaviors. They were characteristics of his nature; his heart was for service and his life was dedicated to being the best man for his family.
Remember Manzo when you see a pumpjack chugging along in metronome precision on the horizon; when you turn on the radio and your favorite corrido is playing, but especially when you see Audrey, Sandra, and Javier. They are his legacy and it is a legacy built on love and adoration.
