Memorial services are scheduled for 3 pm, Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at First United Methodist Church for John Duke Peterson, 83, who passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Sunset Villa Care Center. Rev. Doug Mills of First United Methodist Church will officiate. John was cremated according to his wishes. His cremains will be buried at Mt. View Cemetery in Moriarty, NM.
Duke was born July 29, 1930 in Globe, AZ to A.L. and Jean Sherk Peterson. His parents preceded him in death.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Dorothy Peterson of the family home in Roswell, NM son John R. Peterson of Roswell, NM daughter Anne Peterson of Bryan, TX and grandchildren Kevin and Kate Peterson.
Duke was a 1948 graduate of Carlsbad High School where he played football and basketball. In college, he played on the Lobos varsity basketball team and was later a member of the UNM Alumni Lettermans Association. After college, Duke served in the Navy before embarking on his long career as a geologist. He worked for Texaco for many years, as well as for Hilliard Oil Gas in Midland, TX before moving back to Roswell in 1980 to become an independent oilman. He later worked for Hondo Oil Gas in Roswell. He was a member of AAPG. Duke loved to garden and to go on camping and fishing trips with his family. He was a great champion of his wife, Dorothys, artwork, much of which he matted and framed. Duke was her 1 fan.
