John Carnes

February 20, 1928 — August 2, 2014

John Carnes died peacefully in Roswell, New Mexico on August 2, 2014, at the age of 86. Born February 20, 1928, in Duluth, Minnesota, John served his country in World War II as a Staff Sergeant and Chief Clerk of the 62nd Maintenance Squadron in the Army Air Corps at Bergstrom Field in Austin, TX and later at McChord Field in Tacoma, WA. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA degree in Business and Economics, and was Plant Manager of Mando Photo Co. in Duluth, for 4 years. For most of his 35 year career with IBM Corporation, he was an Administrative Analyst, working in Duluth, Detroit and Minneapolis.

In Duluth, he met and married his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Sternal. They moved from Falcon Heights, MN to Roswell, NM in December 1995.
John is preceded in death by his parents, his sons Stephen and Paul, and his brother Ronald. He is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn, their daughters Nancy Carnes Howard Lambert and Peggy Eric Van Wyk, daughtersinlaw Terry Kris Peterson and Teri Roger Jackson, grandchildren Jason Kelly Carnes, Deirdre Rory Lander, Angie Rick Lyke, and Andrew Nicole Carnes. He is also survived by great grandchildren Brenna, Christopher, Ryan, Chloe, Paige, Alyssa, Ronan, John, Nicholas, Sam, Jack, Jillian and Addison, and his lapwarmer dog Lillie.

A man of many interests, Johns hobbies included astronomy, radio controlled model aircraft, calligraphy, collecting ancient coins, bayonets and other militaria, hunting and fishing, bird watching, genealogy, model railroading, photography, radio and TV repair, rifle, pistol target shooting, and sailing in competition.
He was a devoted member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, Roswell Genealogy Society, WilsonCobb History Genealogy Research Library, and the Roswell Museum and Art Center. He volunteered for many years at The Raptor Center in Minnesota and held offices in the St. Paul Radio Control Club, Twin Cities Ancient Coin Club and the Roswell Astronomy Club.

He was a patient at Fresenius Kidney Center of New Mexico for the past 5 years and was extremely grateful for their kindness and care. He also greatly appreciated the support of all of his medical caregivers in Roswell.

Johns funeral mass will be held at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 2808 North Kentucky Avenue, Roswell, at 12:30pm on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Interment will take place in Minnesota at St. Joseph of the Lakes Catholic Cemetery near his sons.
