Jodene Mulliken passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 in Lubbock, Texas at the age of 83.
Jodene was born on November 25, 1931 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Leo and Grace Sandon. She graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1949. She graduated from Coffeyville Community College in 1951 and the University of Arkansas in 1953. She was selected as Homecoming Queen in 1952 and subsequently represented the University of Arkansas as a Cotton Bowl princess.
Jodene married William Jurney on June 28, 1953. They lived in Coffeyville, Kansas; Bentonville, Arkansas; Roswell, New Mexico; and Toledo, Ohio, where she taught school. Following the death of her husband and son, Jodene continued to teach school in Ohio until she married Albert Mulliken on December 27, 1969 and moved back to Roswell.
An active member of the community, Jodene served on numerous community boards and in political organizations, was a member of PEO Chapter B, Shakespeare Club, Book Club, and was a 63 year member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She will long be remembered by the school children to whom she taught music at Military Heights and Washington Avenue schools.
Jodene was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where she served on the vestry, was a Sunday school teacher, leader of the youth choir, a choir member, and a Cursillo Team Member.
She is survived by five children: daughter Annie Hartman and son-in-law Bill of Bernalillo, New Mexico; son Del Jurney and daughter-in-law Kristie of Roswell; daughter Sarah Smyer and son-in-law Zack of Tuttle, Oklahoma; son Reed Mulliken and daughter-in-law Bernadette of Plainview, Texas; and son Matthew Mulliken and daughter-in-law Ellie of Rockwall, Texas. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Molly Hartman Denlinger, William Hartman, Drew Jurney, Abby Vernon Torres Pi�a, Brandon Smyer, Stacey Smyer Hunter, Breanna Smyer Phillips, Alexandria Mulliken, Meredith Mulliken, Jackson Mulliken, and Madeleine Mulliken, and seven great-grandchildren; her brother Leo Sandon, nephews Stephen and Phillip Sandon, one great-niece, and one great nephew, of Tallahassee, Florida. She is preceded in death by her husbands Bill Jurney and Albert Mulliken, son Andrew Jurney, her sisters-in-law Elaine Mulliken and Marvel Lou Sandon, and her parents Leo and Grace Sandon.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, 10:00 AM, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 505 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Roswell, New Mexico 88201.
