Jewell Garner

Jewell Garner, 90, passed away on April 18, 2009 in Rockdale, Texas. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hagerman Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stephen Deutsch and Elder Betty Nell Miles. Interment will follow at the Hagerman Cemetery.

Jewell Maye Gates was born in Chilton, Texas on December 7, 1918 to William Henry and Minnie Cooley Gates. She was married to John Garner on December 26, 1941 in Lovington, New Mexico.

Mrs. Garner was preceded in death by her husband, John, parents, one sister, Lucille, three brothers, Vincent, Wilson, and Charles, and her son, Bill.

Mrs. Garner lived in Hagerman for 51 years and taught the 5th grade for 40 years. She was a member of the Hagerman Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Artesia Retired Teachers, and AARP.

Survivors of Jewell are one daughter, Donna of Ranger, Texas; two nieces, Vermel Bland of Rockdale, Texas and Bobbie Nelson of Waco, Texas; granddaughters, Melissa and Trixi; grandsons, Michael and Willie; nephew, Kenneth Gates of Moody, Texas.
