Funeral services are schedule for 10 A.M., Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church for Jane Russell Oberkampf Davisson Gibson, 96 an ardent traveler has made her last great earthly adventure in her traveling saga. Reverend Kent Leydens will be officiating with burial to follow at South Park Cemetery.
Jane was born on May 4, 1917 in San Angelo, TX to Harry E Oberkampf and Mabel C. Russell Oberkampf. She loved spending summer times in Ruidoso, NM visiting her grandmother and aunt. Later, she moved to Roswell, NM and attended Roswell High School graduating in 1935. She was a Rainbow girl, Chum, a member of a horseback riding club, and loved ballroom dancing.
She attended the University of Arizona graduating with a major in Fine Art Design inl939. She returned to Roswell where she was hired as the first full time Art teacher at Missouri Avenue School. Later she became the art teacher at her old Alma Mater, Roswell High School. She taught from 19401967 instilling her love for art into the hearts and minds of her students.
She married Lt. Colonel George Allen Davisson in 1945 in Roswell, NM. They were married 17 years. He preceded her in death.
In 1979, she met and married Colonel Walter Lee Gibson in Roswell, NM. Both loved to travel, and spent much of their retirement years as RVers traveling to 17states and 4 countries. From 1980 to the present, she documented their places of travel in diary form complete with sketches in pen, ink, and acrylic.
She is survived by her husband Colonel Walter Gibson of Roswell and step children Sara Gibson of Austin, TX and Scott Gibson of Reno, NV, step grandchildren Ashley, Stephanie and Isabel and two great grandchildren.
Jane was very community minded giving of her time and talent as she served in various capacities. From 19521959, she was an educational curator for the Roswell Museum and Art Center. She served as a Red Cross volunteer from 19411977 and served as the Red Crosss chairman of the board from 19771979. In 1962, she was nominated for Whos Who in Moores Business and Professionals, and in 1970 was a delegate for Presbyterian Women at Purdue University. Her love and eye for art landed her a position as Judge for the New Mexico State Fair Fine Arts Division from 19501960.
Jane was a prolific painter capturing character and emotion in her portraits, beauty in her landscapes, and delicate detail in her many florals. Her love for art was exhibited in all mediums: oils, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, and sculpture. Her home was an extension of her art where she displayed her fine work in a gallery setting.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 70 years. She was a loving wife, great art teacher, and a friend to all. She will be greatly missed.
Serving as pallbearers are Bob Carroll, Gordon Patton, Bob Entrop, Wayne Peterson, Ron Harvey and John Carter.
