James Hughes

July 2, 1928 — October 27, 2014

Graveside services will be held for James Jim S. Hughes at South Park Cemetery on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 1:00pm. Jim passed away on Monday, October 27, 2014 in a family home peacefully surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on July 2, 1928 in Roswell, NM to Henry and Peggy Hughes who were married inside the Carlsbad Caverns at The Rock of Ages. He was a quiet and simple man who loved his family dearly. He enjoyed going on Cattle drives with his childhood idol Sonny Hancock, branding at the ranch with the family including Aunt Ceil. He also enjoyed calf roping in his younger years, and Horse racing as he got older. He graduated from the Frazier Rock School House in 1940. While in High School he always took extra drafting classes, which helped him to become the great builder that he was. He spent a great deal of his time as a child with his grandfather Doc Stevens who was his mentor and taught him the work ethic that he had. His Mom died at a very young age and was the love of his life. He became a building contractor in the 60s and his biggest job was when he was the general contractor when Glovers Packing Company was expanded in the early 1970s. He built many houses around Roswell and throughout the state, but his happiest time was when he was building houses for his family or helping them remodel their homes. Even though he was a small man he always worked as hard as men much bigger than him always trying to make sure the best job was done.

Jim is survived by his family: Dianna Lynn Woods and her husband Steve of Amarillo, TX Sandie Crane and her husband, Dean of Greenville, TX, Steve Hughes and his wife Robin of Roswell, NM, Marcie Wilson and husband Ronney of Roswell, NM. Grandchildren: Marc Woods and his wife Amber, Anne Woods, Melissa Woods. Kevin Gallagher, Amanda Flynn and her husband Bryan, and Sawyer Wilson. Great grandchildren: Brieanna Rich, Chase Rich, Xander Woods and Zailey Woods. Sisters Jenny Lou Mays, Mardeine Cooper and husband Carl, Peggy Ann Paradee and husband Larry, and his brother Richard Hughes. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Peggy Hughes, his Aunt Marceile Payne, and his brotherinlaw Dale Mays.

Honorary pallbearers are Billy Hicks, Dub Shockley, Bill Ledbetter, Marc Woods, Kevin Gallagher and Sawyer Wilson.
