James Lee Freeland

James Lee Freeland, a dedicated farmer and influential community member, passed away on April 8, 2025, in Dexter, New Mexico, at the age of 87. Born on October 22, 1937, in Dawson, Texas, to JB Freeland and Georgia Ruth (Hutchison) Freeland. James lived a life marked by hard work, community engagement, and a deep love for the land.

With an Associate's Degree under his belt, James embraced his role in agriculture with passion and determination. He loved the Lord, the land and his family. He tirelessly worked for Chaves County Soil and Water, ensuring that the earth was cared for and cultivated not just for himself, but for generations to come. His commitment to farming was matched only by his devotion to his community. James served on the Dexter School Board, where he championed education and made significant contributions to the children of Dexter.

James was faithful to the Lord and had been a proud member of the Dexter United Methodist Church, and the Dexter Presbyterian Church, where his faith was a guiding force in his life. He found joy and solace among the congregation, fostering friendships and uplifting others through his benevolence. His involvement extended to the Loves and Fishes Food Pantry, where he dedicated his time to helping those in need, embodying a spirit of generosity and compassion.

James is proceeded in death by his father, JB Freeland, and his mother Georgia Ruth Hutchison Freeland.

He is survived by his loving wife Sue Freeland of Dexter, New Mexico. His son Brian Freeland (Gaynette), and their children Beaty and Shelby Freeland, of Dexter. Daughter Angela Mints (Wayne) of Mansfield, Texas. Their son Tyler Mints (Grace) and their daughters Evelyn Sue and Helen June, of Odessa, Texas.

A memorial service honoring his remarkable life will take place on April 13, 2025, at 4:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Dexter, located at 201 W 5th St, Dexter, NM. Friends and community members are invited to gather and celebrate the impact James made during his time with us.

As we remember James Lee Freeland, we celebrate a man who lived with integrity, showed endless kindness, and was a steadfast friend to many. His legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
