Herbert Martin Schmid was 94 when he passed away at his house on Tuesday September 6, 2016.
Herbert was born on October 26, 1921 to his father Jacob Schmid and his mother Anna Martin at St. Mary's hospital in Roswell NM. His childhood was spent on the family farm near the Berrendo River. He would tell stories of swimming, playing on the railroad tracks and stealing watermelons. Family, friends and strangers who stopped by were always welcome. His father had bees and they sold honey in Roswell and nearby communities. They also supplied honey to NMMI.
Martin served in the military during WW2. He was a marine stationed at Camp Pendleton CA where he taught swimming to new recruits. Herbert served on Wake Island and would always tell stories about the gooney birds, fox holes flooding when the tide came in, and sleeping on wet bed rolls. His job was to patrol the guard towers for the protection of Midway Island.
Herbert married Goldie Lively, who has preceded him in death. Surviving him are his children Wanda Silvers, Alice Bratcher, John Schmid, Joan Norton, Gary Schmid and Edith Sue Heaton; sisters Virginia Brewer and Marcine McDaniel.
Herbert was preceded in death by a daughter Connie Sims; siblings Heine Schmid, Hans Schmid, Helen Marshall, Charlie Schmid, Roy Schmid, Mary DeBorde and Elizabeth Ann Schmid.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Roswell Veterans Honor Guard, 702 Broken Arrow Rd., Roswell, NM 88201.
A visitation is scheduled on Monday September 9, 2016 at Ballard Funeral Home from 10am to 1pm with a graveside service to be announced at a later time.
