A graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 27, 2010 at South Park Cemetery for Harold Hummer, 86 of Roswell who passed away May 24, 2010 at his home. Pastor Richard Grisham of Bethel Baptist Church will officiate.
Harold was born on December the 18th, 1923 in Chanute, Kansas to Lester Leon Hummer and Nellie Doris Macmillan Hummer. They have preceded him in death along with his wife Gertrude May Hummer and their one son, Donald Hummer.
His is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Ellison, of Farmington, NM by his fiance, Nelda Odell, and a friend, Robert Odell, who took Harold into his home for three months to care for him in his time of need. Harold had many friends Mrs. Dorman Fox, Nettie Britt, Georgie, Joice, Rose Ann, Sandra Moore, Kenneth Beavers, and Joe and Dennis Carr.
The family wishes to give many thanks and appreciation to Vista Cares nurses, Frances and Becky, and to the CANs.
Harold faithfully served our great country as Staff Sergeant during WWII in the Army Air Forces 60th Signal Aircraft Warning Detachment as an Expert carbine Radio Mechanic in Normandy and France. His service to our National Defense occurred with the 370th Fighter Group in the European Theater. He operated high frequency directional equipment to guide fighter planes returning from missions. He also repaired and operated other types of military receiving and transmitting radio sets, and he was skilled in setting up wire communications systems.
Harold Hummer helped protect the striking force that swept the Luftwaffe from the skies and broke the German power to resist. America was proud to have him as a part of its team, and now God is proud to have him as part of His team.
Harold went on and worked as a sales person at Herring produce for many years retiring approximately 15 years ago.
