Funeral services are scheduled for 2 pm, Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Ballard Funeral Home Chapel for Goldie Ross, 89, who passed away Sunday, October 18, 2015 in Roswell. Sharon Bailey and other family members will be officiating.
Goldie was born August 27, 1926 in McCloud, OK to William Randolph Bray and Mollie Mae Ash Bray whom both preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her husband Robert Ross Sr., son Robert Ross Jr.; brothers Joe Bray, Ben Bray and Tommy Bray and sisters Pearl Ash, Ruby Hall, Liddy Smith and June Owen.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons Don Ross Sr. and wife Cora of Roswell, NM and Steve Ross of Denver, CO; daughter Rita Bailey of Little Elm, TX; brother Charles Smith and wife Dorothy of Oregon; grandchildren Sharon Bailey, Brandy Bailey Ray, Carissa Chaves, Donald Ross Jr., Jeremy Ross and Jason Ross; great grandchildren Rylea Ross, Bradley Chaves, Nicholas Ross, Dylan Ross, Avery Ross, Moses Ross, Kirstyn Ray and Sarah Ray and one great-great granddaughter Kailea Perez.
Goldie met the love of her life, Robert Ross, and they were wed in Portales, NM, on July 31, 1943. While her husband fought with the US Navy in World War II, Goldie worked to support the war effort on the Home front in Clovis, NM. She worked on steam locomotive engines for troop transport trains in the Roundhouse in Clovis; additionally, she worked at the PX at Cannon Army Air Field. Once her husband returned from war, Goldie and Robert relocated to the Roswell area in 1946, where they lived and raised their children.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a founding member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Roswell. Goldie was a strong proponent of education and set the example for her children and grandchildren by returning to school as a mother of teenagers to complete her education. Once her children were grown, Goldie matriculated at Eastern New Mexico University in Roswell and graduated with an Associate Degree. From 1971 to 1974 she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistance at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center.
Serving as pallbearers are Don Ross Sr., Don Ross Jr., Jeremy Ross, Jason Ross, Bradley Chaves and Jody Ray.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to either Roswell Humane Society, 703 E. McGaffey St., Roswell, NM 88203 or Labrador Life Line, 6 North Street, West Newbury, MA 01985.
