A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church in Dexter for Glenn Smith Marshall, 81, of Dexter who passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Rev Stephen Deutsch of First Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Glenn was born on August 15, 1928 on the farm in Dexter, NM to Ira W. Marshall and Mary Smith Marshall. His parents have preceded him in death as well as a daughter, Pegye Marshall, a grandson, Kedric Hobbs, his brothers, Paul Marshall and Wayne Marshall and his sisters: Eulah Barnett, Phyllis Powell, Garnelle Woods, Laura Dockray and Edith Coble, his son in laws: Randy Hobbs, Steve Frangos, and his mother in law, Maude Pirtle.
Glenn married June Pirtle on June 1, 1947 in Dexter, New Mexico. She survives him at the family home. Glenn is also survived by his sons: Larry Marshall and wife Trisha of Roswell and Brenyn Marshall of Juneau, AK his daughters: Barbara Hobbs of Graham, TX, Connie Marshall of Vail, CO, Kimberly Frangos and John Hudson of Juneau, AK and Bryelle Marshall of Juneau, AK his grandchildren: Ryan Marshall and wife Iris, Jan Mohan and husband Nathan, Ashley Smith, Tyler Smith, Kyla Kendall and husband Justin, Tamara Hansen and husband Aaron, Madux Hobbs and wife Audra, Cougan Hobbs and Brodryk Hobbs and his great grandchildren:Caleb, Landry, Preston and Kylin Kendall and Emma and Ella Hobbs.
Glenns love was for his family, his farm, and his community. He had his children young, so he could raise, and teach, and help, and enjoy them. He was an energetic, progressive farmer. He was always looking for ways to be more efficient, through wiseuse conservation, working to be a good steward. From surveying contour dirt ditches, to terraces with concrete ditches, to pivots...he was always striving for a better way. He was active in Dexter and the Pecos Valley. He helped organize and charter the DexterHagerman Little League, worked on building the first field, and coached the first All Star Team. Knowing youth are our future, Glenn served 13 years on the Dexter School board, helping plan state of the art projects. On his knees with neighbors, he helped pour the curbing around the high school track. He filmed football games with his 16mm movie camera. He was a president and meet director of the Roswell Aquatic Association, enthusiastically watching many local youth win state and regional swimming competitions.
Glenn was an avid hunter and nature lover. He supported and participated in the Milkman Triathlon for 25 years. He was a passionate student of all things, including genealogy, history, and archeology. He was a member of New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau, PCAFarm Credit of New Mexico for 61 years, and the National Rifle Association. He earned a life rank in Boy Scouts of America, was Lake Van Golf Club Champion, and member of Farmers CoOp Gin.
The Marshall family recognizes the Pecos Valley community to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
