Gilbert Ornelas

August 2, 1948 — January 21, 2014

A resident of Roswell, NM for the past 40 years passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the age of 65. He passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Big Spring, TX on August 2, 1948 to Serapio and Santiga Ornelas, they both preceded him in death and also his brother Carlos Ornelas.

Gilbert served in the US Army and fought in the Vietnam War. On December 1, 1973 he was honorably discharged from the armed forces. He went to work for the United States Postal Service were he retired after 30 years.Then on July 14, 1974 he married the love of his life Maria del Carmen Macias. They have four children Elvira Martinez and her husband Rodrigo, Carmen Gonzales and her husband J.D, Sylvia Garcia and her husband Gustavo and his son Gilbert Ornelas Jr. and his wife Catrina. He has 12 grandchildren and one on the way Saulito Carrillo Jr., Richard Gonzales, Gilbert M. Ornelas III, Gustavo Garcia Jr., Samantha Carrillo, Marco Gonzales, Steven Garcia, Jeremy Ornelas, Crystal Garcia, Aaliyah Ornelas, Tiana Ornelas, Emrie Ornelas, Nathan Ornelas, Angelique Garcia and soon to be born grandson. Gilbert also has his brothers Eddy Ornelas and his wife Rosa, Max Ornelas, Arturo Ornelas sister Mary Gonzales and husband Lupe brotherinlaws Jose, Hector Macias and his wife Veronica, Ramon Macias, Pablo Macias and his wife Mari and numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary is scheduled for 6pm, Thursday, January 23, 2014 at St. Peters Catholic Church. Mass is scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday, January 24, 2014 also at St. Peters Catholic Church with Father Andrew Miles presiding. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery with Roswell Veterans Honor Guard conducting military graveside services.

Serving as pallbearers are Saul Carrillo Jr., Richard Gonzales, Gilbert Miguel Ornelas, Gustavo Garcia Jr., Marco Gonzales and Steven Garcia.

The hope that we have is that through Jesus Christ we will see each other again. He is not gone but still alive and breathing in Heaven, completely healed of pain and tear free. As a family you all stick together, grieve together and be there for each other through it all. Thank God for all the amazing years, days, hours, moments we all got to spend with him here on earth. We love you Daddy
