Frances Valdez Nunez

Fran Valdez Nunez, 69 of Roswell lost her battle with cancer on September 9, 2007. . Fran was born on September 23, 1937 to Ramon and Carolina Valdez, who precede her in death along with her brothers: Laly and Richard and her sister, Hazel. She was the sixth of 10 siblings.

Fran is survived by her husband, Steve, her children: Carolyn Doug Conklin of Wickenburg, AZ, Steve DeeAnn Nunez, Jim Nunez, Mary Faith Nunez, all of Roswell, Flori Jo Nunez of Albuquerque, her sisters: Aurelia Gonzales of Roswell, Mary Tellez of Las Cruces, Flo Valdez of El Paso, Texas, brothers: Bob, George, and Jim Valdez of Roswell, 10 grandchildren, two great grandchildren with one on the way.

Fran was a native of Roswell. Her family owned and operated The Valdez Caf. She worked as an instrument nurse at St. Marys Hospital for many years. After leaving the hospital, she remained in the medical field working as an assistant for Dr. Frank Schwarz and Dr. Nicholson. Fran loved her work and would have continued if not for being diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

In 1994, Fran went into remission and remained for 15 years. In May 2007, she was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer Multiple Myeloma. With the help of many fine nurses and doctors at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center and the Cancer Center and Covenant, Fran continued her fight. The angels escorted her home on September 9, 2007.

Fran will be remembered for: loving her family, championing the underdog, being an avid sports fan, a surrogate mother, a friend and confident. She will be missed.

A memorial service in her honor is planned for Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. Services are under the direction of Ballard Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers a Memorial contribution can be made to the Community Foundation of Chaves County at 1717 W. 2nd Street.
