Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 3 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Roswell for Evelyn Thompson Bassett, 98, who passed away on January 29, 2007. Evelyn was born on December 13, 1908 in Austin, Texas. She was one of seven children of Robert Andrew Thompson and Evelyn Dickson Thompson.
Evelyn attended the University of California and later graduated from the University of Texas in Austin after which she moved to Dallas, Texas. After marrying Walden Bassett in that city on June 17, 1933, the couple moved to Roswell. Walden, a highly regarded accountant, continued to practice his profession in Roswell until his death in 1959.
Evelyn was admitted to the National Society of Colonial Dames in 1934 and remained a member of Alpha Phi Sorority until her death. Her commitment to the community and church was evidenced in many ways. When Walker Air Force Base was active, she served as volunteer and chairman of the Gray Ladies who provided valuable support to the patients at WAFB Hospital. Evelyn was a member and served as president of the Shakespeare Club, and enjoyed her affiliations with the Roswell Book Club, the Junior Book Club, the Birthday Club and the 27 Club. She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, its Auxiliary and its Junior Guild, serving terms as president of both. Two of her favorite pastimes were playing bridge and poker with her friends. Evelyn was not only an avid reader but an engaging conversationalist as well. In her later years her favorite ritual was enjoying an early evening glass of wine with her friends.
Surviving Evelyn are her three children, Elanor Bassett Schrimsher of Scottsdale, Arizona, John Walden Bassett, Jr., of Roswell and Benjamin Andrew Bassett of Dallas, Texas and her grandchildren, Max L. Schrimsher, Jr., Timothy Walden Schrimsher, Tracy Schrimsher Tonn, John W. Bassett, III and Loren P. Bassett. Evelyn is also survived by eight great grandchildren.
