Ernestine Harrison

2/20/1928 - 12/30/2021

Ernestine Harrison, age 93, went home to meet her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 30, 2021. In death, she joins AJ, her beloved husband of 72 years.

Born in Old Glory, TX, in 1928, Ernestine and her family moved to the Roswell area at an early age to take advantage of agricultural work opportunities in the Pecos Valley. Ernestine met her eventual husband while they were both picking cotton. As a member of the greatest generation, Ernestine lived through the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II. A stalwart survivor, she and her family lost houses and all their possessions on separate occasions to natural disasters. Ernestine and AJ wed July 23, 1945, while AJ was on weekend furlough from the US Navy. Together, they raised three daughters. Ernestine was a homemaker, PTA president, 4H and Extension Club leader, RHS Booster Club supporter, and accomplished cook and seamstress. Ernestine worked for the City of Roswell Water Department for 25 years. She had nine grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren whom she doted on. In retirement, Ernestine and AJ spent many hours traveling, playing Forty-Two, and attending myriad sporting events in which their grandchildren participated. Baptized into the Christian faith in 1966, Ernestine was a faithful congregant of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Her last moments were spent listening to hymns and praying for heaven.

She is preceded in death by her husband AJ Harrison; brother Allen Harris; sister Francis Carpenter; daughter Peggy Thomas; son-in-law Gerry Thomas, and granddaughters Melissa Montgomery and Amber Thomas-Wells. She is survived by her daughter and caretaker, Carol Montgomery, daughter Pat Dodson and her husband Bob, seven grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.
