Elwood Woody Verlin Hogge
Funeral Services will be held at Ballard Chapel for Elwood Woody Verlin Hogge, at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 2, 2006. Military graveside rights will be conducted at Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday, November 3, 2006 at 2:00 p.m.
Woody was born in Whitesburg, Kentucky on October 14, 1924, but his parents, Jonah and Viola Hogge, moved to Detroit, Michigan, when he was quite young, so he regarded Michigan as home. BRWoody had three siblings, Bill, Barbara and Robert.
He showed his love of this country by serving in the Army in World War II.BRHe first trained in the cavalry, then in the armored tank
ision. He was involved in the invasion at Utah Beach, where he received a head wound. BRIn France, he was shot in the knee, which nearly severed his leg. BRHe was wounded once more, in the hand, before the war was over.BRHe received a Purple Heart and a Congressional Metal of Honor during this time.
PWoody showed his love of the community by serving as a Detroit Fire Fighter for 26 years. During that service, he fought many fires and saved several lives. In 1949, while fighting a house fire in Detroit, he met Ellen Arlene Garrett, who was baby-sitting her younger sisters when the fire started in the basement. Woody and Ellen were married February 1st, 1952 on Bride and Groom, a CBS Television Program. Woody had written to the program describing their unique meeting.SPAN stylemso-spacerun:
