Elena Montoya

Elena Montoya, 87, of Roswell, NM went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. She was surrounded by the love of her family. She was a beloved mother, sister, and friend to so many. She was a loving Mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a friend to many and they cherished her dearly.

Elena was born on May 31, 1928 in Tortugas, NM to Jose and Victoria Bernal. In 1945, she married Jose Montoya and they had six children. The family moved to Roswell in 1963. Elena occupied her time by gardening, which allowed her to provide for her family. She also worked for many years at Coca-Cola bottling company. Elena raised her children to take care of each other. She inspired the children to keep moving forward.
Elena was a devout and faithful contributor to the St. Jude's Foundation. She collected St. Jude statues. She was a strong believer and had a strong faith.

Those left to cherish Elena's memory are her children, Robert (Rovi) Montoya and wife Irene, of Yuma, AZ. Lydia (Lila) Tankersley of Roswell, NM, Joe (Junie) Montoya and his late wife Gloria of Roswell, NM, Elisa (Tita) Montoya of Roswell, NM, David Montoya and Peggy of Paris, ME, Alejandro (Alex) Montoya and his wife Tina of Roswell, NM. She also had 15 adored grandchildren Jimmy Lyons of Roswell, NM, Vikki Flowers and husband Darrell of Glendale, AZ, Cindy Gilbert and husband Kyle of Roswell, NM, Christina Madsen, and husband Dale of Bryan, TX, Debra Merigo and husband Al of Las Cruces, NM, Denise Burrola and husband Moises "Dude" of Roswell, NM, Teresa Montoya of Yuma, AZ, Minerva Green of Richmond, KY, Randy Montoya and wife Sonya of Roswell, NM, Anna Montoya, Joshua Montoya, Daniel Montoya, and Olivia Montoya all of Roswell, NM, Levi Montoya and Lucas Montoya of Paris, ME. Additional surviving Elena, are 21 great-grandchildren.

Those honored as pallbearers are Jimmy Lyons, Randy Montoya, Izaiah Montoya, Bryce Sanchez, Tarren Burrola, Taymon Burrola, Joshua Montoya and Daniel Montoya.
Honorary pallbearers are Robert Montoya, Joe Montoya, David Montoya, Alex Montoya, Dale Madsen, Sean Flowers, Trey Burrola, Adam Montoya, Levi Montoya, Lucas Montoya, Eddie Montoya, Frankie Bernal, Hilario Bernal and Lalo Bernal.

A Vigil with Rosary will be recited at 7 pm, Friday, April 8, 2016 at Assumption Catholic Church. Mass of Resurrection will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, April 9, 2016 also at Assumption Catholic Church with Father Josh Duplissey presiding. Burial is scheduled for 1 pm, Monday, April 11, 2016 at South Park Cemetery.
