Elaine Velda Houston
Memorial Services will be held for Elaine Black Houston, 80, of Roswell at 3:30 pm Monday, December 10, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Archie Echols officiating. Elaine passed away on December 1, 2012 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers.
Elaine was born March 4, 1932, to Zula and Paul Black in Hatch, New Mexico. She married Bradley Houston in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on June 4, 1953. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Kenneth Black.
She is survived by her husband of 59 wonderful years, Bradley Houston, her daughters Debra Langley and her husband Rocky of Roswell, New Mexico and Janet Sobien and her husband Pancho of Santa Fe, New Mexico her grandchildren Kristy Langley Mason and her husband Glenn of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Steven Langley and his wife Olivia of Roswell, New Mexico great grandchildren Hunter Bradley Mason, David Langley, Austin Langley, Taylor Langley and Garrett Langley nieces Rhonda Black and Linda Trotter and their families.
Elaine grew up on the PriceBlack dairy farm in southern Sierra County and graduated from Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequences. She earned a bachelor of science in education from New Mexico State University and taught elementary school students in Roswell for several years. She went back to college and received a library certificate and served as librarian at the White Sands Elementary School for four years. After moving back to the PriceBlack dairy farm in 1970, she served as librarian at the Hatch High School and Junior High School libraries for five years.
Brad and Elaine moved back to Roswell in 1982. Elaine was very active in the Assistance League of Chaves County. She held multiple offices and compiled the yearbook for several years. She was also active in Misslamo Extension Club. Elaine spent many hours at the Roswell Adult Center doing ceramics, macram and tole decorative painting.
The Houstons square danced since 1968 at various clubs throughout New Mexico. They joined the First United Methodist Church of Roswell in 1953. Elaine was a member of WSCS for 14 years and served as treasurer for several years. She was an avid bridge player and played in several duplicate and party bridge groups. Elaine thoroughly loved to travel. Elaine and Brad were fortunate to have visited 49 states and 34 foreign countries.
The family wishes to thank La Villa and Vista Care for their caring help, as well as all of the supportive friends and family who have helped and comforted us throughout her extensive illness.
