Dorothy Neal Snead
A closed casket service is scheduled for 2:30, Thursday, November12, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church for Dorothy Neal Snead, 84, of Roswell who passed away November 10, 2009, at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Dr. Hugh Burroughs of First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the Ballard Funeral Home Wednesday, November 11, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Dorothy was born on August 9, 1925 in Sherman, TX to Harvey LeVan Williams and Mildred Leecraft. Her parents have preceded her in death.
Dorothy graduated from High School in Durant, OK as valedictorian at the age of 16. She then went on to graduate from Southeastern Oklahoma State Teachers College 3 years later with a straight A Bachelor of Arts in music. She corresponded with several G.I.s from the area during World War II. She was swept off her feet by a handsome Choctaw Lt. Pilot from Idabel, OK., based solely on his romantic closings, the steamiest being Sincerely Yours. She decided 1st Lt. Edward Paul Snead Jr. should be her husband. They married 2 weeks after he returned on June 7, 1945, at 1st Presbyterian Church in Durant, Oklahoma. They then went to Oklahoma University where Dorothy received her Masters in Vocal Performance and was DJ at the Oklahoma University Radio Station for the Opera Hour. Following her lawyer husband to Roswell in 1949, she taught Choir and English at North Junior High school until staying at home to be a full time mother.
Dorothy is survived by her son: Edward Paul Snead III and family of Buena Vista, Colorado; her two daughters: Laura Jane Waters and husband John of Mt. Home, Arkansas, and Susan Zimmer-Allen and husband John of Salisbury, MD; and two adopted children: Mary Torres and Pardner Wynn; as well as a grandson: Daniel Zimmer, a law student at Rutgers.
Dorothy was a 60 year member of P.E.O, DAR Member, Capt. Henry A. Neal, NC, an elder at 1st Presbyterian Church, played in the Kaler Hand Bell Choir at 1st United Methodist Church for 39 years, and sang in many community chorus productions. When she turned 80 years old she was honored as a respected elder of the Chickasaw Nation. She also belonged to the 1941 Book Club and Olivet Study Club.
Pallbearers will be Mark Daniels, Dan Moats, Steve Wolfe, Bill Cooper, Rod Schumacher, Jim Bozarth. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Chaves County Bar Association, PEO Sisterhood, Kaler Handbell Choir and 1941 Book Club.
