Dorothy Jean Peterson was promoted to glory on June 8, 2018. She was born in Marquette, Nebraska, on December 18, 1931, to Harold and Myrtle Anderson and was a graduate of Marquette High School in 1949.
Dorothy had a large family and many friends and loved to be around people. She was very creative and enjoyed making crafts, reading, and writing letters. She even famously collected buttons in her youth!
She went to extraordinary means to keep in touch with all the many people in her life. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
She had two brothers, Donald and wife Vivian Anderson of Central City, Nebraska, and Ralph and wife Patty Anderson of San Marcos, California. Dorothy entered in marriage with Roy Keith Peterson on May 26, 1950,
in Marquette, Nebraska, and they enjoyed a 62 year marriage until Roy's passing in 2012. They were blessed with five children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The family moved to Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1967.
Roy and Dorothy loved Roswell and spent the remainder of their lives as residents. They were very active in Trinity United Methodist Church, and Dorothy was recently honored as a 50 year-long member of the church.
She ran the nursery in the church for many years and could also be found cleaning the kitchen and organizing the church library. Dorothy often volunteered as a greeter at the Roswell Museum and Art Center.
Dorothy is survived by two sons and two daughters. Gregory Peterson resides in Albuquerque. Her daughter Kathie and husband Charles Sherman reside in Barrington, Rhode Island. Her daughter Janice and husband Jake Villareal live in Roswell,
and son John resides in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Dorothy is also survived by her grandchildren: Brooks Thode and partner Laura Parks of McPherson, Kansas; Joshua Thode, resident of the world-at-large; Jacob Villareal and wife Rita of Roswell; Justin Villareal and wife Deyanira of Albuquerque;
Stephen Sherman and wife Glenn of Little Compton, Rhode Island; and grand-daughter Mya Sherman of New Orleans, Louisiana. Dorothy was proud to be a great-grandmother: Savannah Thode of McPherson, Kansas, and Patricia (P.J.) Villareal of Roswell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Susan Alden, and husband Roy.
Dorothy Jean Peterson loved life and fought a lengthy battle with her health to enjoy her life in Roswell as long as she possibly could. She passed away peacefully at Sunset Villa Care Center with all of her children present.
In lieu of flowers, Dorothy asked that donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1413 S. Union, Roswell, NM 88203 in her memory.
The family would like to thank her very dearest friends for their love and care, especially this past year. Mom was also blessed with many caregivers these past seven years - who enriched her life with care, warmth, and good humor.
