Derrell Thomson

July 11, 1956 — November 19, 2017

Mr. Derrell Thomson of Roswell New Mexico left this world on November 19, 2017 in Lubbock, Texas after a ten year struggle of illness that he fought so valiantly against. Derrell was born on July 11, 1956 to W.G. and Nora Bell Thomson in Espanola New Mexico. Both of his parents have preceded him in death. Derrell has spent the last 25 years in Roswell.
Derrell grew up in the small village of Corona N.M. situated on Route 54 just east of Gallinas Peak. Derrell enjoyed the freedom that the small town provided with shards of arrowheads dotting the high desert for him to collect or the many box canyons and crevasses to explore any young man could occupy his days with endless adventures. Derrell had two sides: the first was the strength and raw stamina to swing an axe for cutting fire wood, a job that required brute force, and the second with the finesses and delicacy of an artesian to meticulously whittle away the raw wood into perfect and intricate miniatures.
His talents extended to every task that he undertook. He was a mechanic, inclined for the metal inner workings of machines, he was diligent and attentive fixing what needed fixing. He spent time as a pipeline welder working in the harsh environment of the elements he made sure everything he touched could be counted as dependable and reliant. He loved drawing and coloring. The rough hardy hands of a mechanic and welder could produce beautiful and amazing works of art.
Mr. Thomson was a jovial soul with a warm inviting sense of humor. He relished the friendly banter between friends and laughing hard till tears rolled out with family. The legacy of Derrell's life could be summed up by his artistry and work ethic but this would not be completely accurate. His true legacy is derived in the unconditional love of his wife Kathy who gave him the sunshine of everyday, his children who inspired purpose in everything he did and his grandchildren who made finding joy in life so easy to obtain. The family that he loved and the values he instilled in them will be the legacy that lives on in the generation now and the generations to come. Mr. Thomson will be greatly missed and a Derrell sized hole that has developed by his passing will be filled now by his memory.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Kathy Thomson; Son Waylon Thomson and his children Devin & Ryanne of Arkansas; Daughters April Thomson Owings and her son Dawson of Arkansas, Milisa Thomson Montgomery of Arkansas, Alicia Thomson Capotorto and Thomas with their son Isaiah of Roswell N.M.; Stepson Dwight Kincaid and Amber and their children Wesley, & Tatum; Stepdaughter Michelle Kincaid; Father-in-law and mother-in-law Bob and Sandy Pottle. He is preceded in death by his parents W.G. Thomson and Nora Bell Thomson. Honorary Pallbearer and best friend will be Dean Porter. The family would like to thank Ballard Funeral Home.
Friends and family are welcome to gather in Corona, N.M. at the cemetery on Sunday December 10, 2017 at 1:00pm.
