After a short illness, Cruz Madrid passed from this world to the next at University Medical Center in Lubbock, TX on Thursday, September 17, 2015. A rosary is scheduled for 7 pm, Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Ballard Funeral Home Chapel. A mass is scheduled for 10 am, Monday, September 21, 2015 at St. John's Catholic Church with burial to follow at South Park Cemetery. The family will be accepting visitation from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Ballard Funeral Home Chapel.
Cruz was born in Corona, NM on July 16, 1935. Cruz's parents were Pedro and Consuelo Madrid. Cruz's siblings included, Richard, Henry, Connie, Pete and Esperanza. All of Cruz's siblings preceded him in death except his little sister Esperanza.
Cruz married his High School Sweetheart Connie in 1955 in Roswell, NM and they were married for 60 years. Connie survives him and continues to live in Roswell. Cruz and Connie had four children. They include Steven, Fernando, Andrew and Yolanda. Yolanda preceded her father in death in February of 2015. His children's spouses include, Lupe Madrid, wife of Steven, Diane Madrid, wife of Fernando and Tom Hawley, husband of Yolanda. Cruz and Connie had seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Cruz began his Civil Service career at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, NM in 1955. Cruz transferred to Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, NM in 1966 where his career developed into a position in the Personnel Department that he eventually retired from.
In 1976 Cruz transferred to a Personnel position at Torrejon Air Force Base in Madrid, Spain where he remained with his family for 3 years. This transfer enabled Cruz and Connie the good fortune to travel with their family through many countries in Europe. These travels gave their family the opportunity to experience many areas of the world they may not have been able to otherwise. Cruz and Connie returned stateside to Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, NM in 1979 where they remained until Mr. Madrid's retirement. After retiring early, Cruz and Connie moved back to Roswell, NM where their lives began together.
Serving as pallbearers are Arcenio Madrid, Albert Rios, Luis Barrera, Frank Saiz, Joe Nunez and Santiago Valencia. Honorary pallbearers are Damian Madrid, Carlos Hawley and Isaac Hawley.
Cruz Madrid was loved and will be missed by his family and friends.
