Clifford Reid

September 10, 1945 — February 15, 2018

Clifford Chester (Kip) Reid passed away in Louisville, KY, on January 15, 2018. He was born on September 10, 1945 in Roswell, NM to John and Helen Reid. Kip had three older brothers, George (deceased) John (deceased) and Robert (Bud) of Louisville, KY.

Kip grew up on the family farm in Dexter and graduated from Dexter High School in 1964. He excelled in football, baseball, and track. Early in his youth Kip survived a severe case of polio. Also, early on, he took a nickname because a little baby girl couldn't say "Cliff." The best she could do was "Kip." In New Mexico, that name stuck with him, but elsewhere in California, he is Cliff or Clifford. After high school, Kip had a baseball scholarship to New Mexico Highlands University, but turned it down to serve in the Army. He spent three years with the Army in Germany.

Kip returned to Dexter and worked for Calvin Sterrett in the well drilling business. Later, Dan Lewis, a close family friend, helped Kip get a job in California with Kaiser Aluminum. Dan and Kip remained close friends, along with Dan's brother Jack. Jack and Kip grew up together in Dexter. When Kip became extremely ill, most recently, and on at least two other occasions, Jack came to his aid.

Kip had a very important skill. He was a certified masseur, first working on people, then on horses. With respect to horses, he initially practiced his skill on horses owned by the Bogle family in Dexter before taking it to California where he lived for the past 30 years. He greatly admired the people who were involved in the California horse business and sports, and loved their horses. The horses Kip worked on competed in all aspects of horse show events and racing.

Kip had many friends, primarily because he was so kind and caring. He treasured and respected them and appreciated their great loyalty. Kip was very lucky in California to have a landlord, Ann Raugstad, and two close neighbors, Kelly Ranger and Justine Bradley, who were very good to him, particularly in times of need. Thanks go to those special people.

Kip will be interred next to his mother and father at South Park Cemetery in Roswell, NM. Burial will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 9:30 AM. This will be a family event primarily, but anyone is welcome to attend. This will be followed by a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church in Dexter at 11:30 AM. Lunch will be served after the service.

In place of flowers, please consider a gift to the American Lung Association, or to a charity of your choice. Acknowledgements in care of Robert Reid, 5104 Dunvegan Road, Louisville, KY 40222.
