Charles C. McGarrity

Charles C. McGarrity was born in Smithsville, TX on October 20, 1928. In 1942, at the age of 14, Charlie moved to Roswell, NM with his family. After joining the Army, he began boxing. This was the beginning of a successful career, leading to championship fights in Madison Square Garden. In 1954, Charles known as Kid Chocolate, was rated the second-best Featherweight boxer in the world. In 1957 he ceased fighting and began training and coaching at the Boys Club, the police department, and eventually at New Mexico Military Institute NMMI, where he remained for eight years. In 1979 McGarrity retired from NMMI and from boxing altogether in order to pursue a course he felt was more rewarding. It was during that time that Charles C. McGarrity took up the fine fight of the faith and was dedicated and baptized as one of Jehovahs Witnesses 1Tim 6:12 Charles expressed his delight in Jehovah, his spiritual brothers in the congregation, and his hope of a resurrection to life on a paradise earth. Psalm 37:29 On February 18, 2008 he lost his final fight to cancer.
Charles is survived by his wife Rosemae Cloteal McGarrity, his sister, Mrs. Pearl Jennings, and a host of nieces, nephews, and stepchildren. He is also survived by Ted Kuykendall and Bonni Smith; who were close as family to him.
Memorial services will be 6:00 p.m., Friday, February 22, 2008, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses located at 1718 N. Atkinson Ave. Roswell, NM
