Graveside services will be held Monday, March 16, 2009 at 11:00 AM at South Park Cemetery for Charles D. Browning, Sr., 86, of Roswell. Mr. Browning passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at a local care center after a long battle with cancer. Pastor Lonnie Owens of Christ Church will officiate.

Charles was born on April 24, 1922 in Gilbert, West Virginia to J. Nelson and Ellen Sayer Browning. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Emogene and Elizabeth Browning, and five brothers: Guy, Garland, Ben, Harry, and Dana Browning; his mother-in-law, Fannie Musick, brothers-in-law, Joe Musick, Maurice Musick, and Bill Lester, Dave Williams, and Glynn Rhodes.

He grew up and attended school in West Virginia. He worked in the coal mines until 1956 when he and his family moved to New Mexico. He worked for the New Mexico State Highway Department, Dick Wright Engineering, and James Waide Construction. Charles was in the Army Air Corps, was a veteran of WWII, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a thirty-second Mason and served as a past Master of his Blue Lodge in Yeager, West Virginia. He was a member of the Masons for 60 years.

Charles is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Ruth Browning. They were married July 24, 1947 in Gilbert, West Virginia. Charles loved his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by one daughter, Paula Camp and her husband Danny of Roswell, NM and one son, Charles D. Chuck Browning, Jr. and his wife Swanee of New Braunfels, TX; his grandchildren, Ty Camp and his wife Sarah of Lexington, KY, Scarlett Kiowski and her husband Ben of Buda, TX, Shannon Chandler of Roswell, NM, Charlie Browning of New Braunfels, TX, and Amanda Leeper and her husband Jonathan of New Braunfels, TX; great-grandchildren, Emelie, Jillian and Avery Kiowski of Buda, TX and Michael Chandler of Roswell, NM. In addition, he is survived by one brother, J. Nelson Browning, Jr. of Charleston, WVa; a sister-in-law Mary Ruth Browning of Cleveland, Ohio, brother-in-law Everett Musick and wife Doris of Corsicana, TX, sister-in-law Virginia Williams of Richardson, TX, sister-in-law Barbara Lester of Bristol, VA, brother-in-law Ronald Ellis and wife Sarah of New Braunfels, TX, sister-in-law Sue Rhodes of Albuquerque, NM, sister-in-law Mary Musick of Edgewood, NM, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Danny Camp, Ty Camp, Charlie Browning, Terry Rhodes, Kendell Buzard, and Jonathan Leeper. Honorary pallbearers will be Carol Martin, Pat Dwyer, Harvey Long, Cotton Stevens, and James Waide.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607.
