Funeral services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at Ballard Funeral Chapel for Carson Freddie Lowman, CMSGT USAF Ret. who went home to be with his loving God on Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at his residence. Pastor Eldridge Butch Neal of South Manor Baptist Church will conduct the services, and interment will follow at South Park Cemetery, with a Military Honor Guard, at the gravesite.
Carson was born, April 5, 1924 in Odenton, Maryland to Fulton Lowman and Idella Lowman. Both parents precede him in death as well as eleven brothers and sisters.
Carson married Barbara Thurman on October 2, 1948 in Roswell, N.M. She preceded him in death in April 1999.
Carson served in the Navy from 1940 until 1943. He then entered the Air Force and retired as a CMSGT and crew Chief of the Hq. Sqd. 6th Strat Aero Wing SAC, Walker AFB, on Sept. 20, 1965.
Carson joined the City of Roswell as Asst. Airport Manager in 1967 at the closure of Walker AFB. He later became the Airport Manager and held that position until his retirement on March 1, 1976. He served the City under leadership of Gail Harris, Wm. F.Brainerd, and Jerry N. Smith. His tenure as Airport Manager was at the time when the City of Roswell was diligently recruiting business for the Air Center. As Airport Manager Carson was responsible for the city owned buildings as well as airfield related matters. During Carsons tenure as Airport Manager the FAA certification of the new Boeing 747, Douglas DC-10, and the Lockheed L1011 were carried out. Pan American Airlines and Luftansa Airlines did their pilot training during this time. Also during this time the new Airport Terminal Building was built. He then became Chaves County Manager Jan. 3, 1977 and retired from that position , on Sept. 11, 1979.
Carson had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years. He was deeply rooted in his faith and did not hesitate to share it with others. He was deeply grateful for all of Gods blessings.
Carson and wife Barbara enjoyed RVing taking along with them their beloved dogs. Never having had children, their dogs were a source of great enjoyment. Carson never met a stranger. He had many close friendships from the military as well as his civilian life and those friendships have remained throughout the years. Carson had a sense of humor second to none, and his quick wit was sure to make a person laugh heartily. He was a beloved husband, faithful friend, and will be truly missed by all who knew him. Carson was a member of the VFW and the Eagles Lodge. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews living in Maryland, Illinois, Florida and New Mexico. He is also survived by his loving and devoted companion Gennie Dove. Pallbearers are: Herman Burkstaller, Jim Cogdill, Downey Cheatem, Tim Thurman, Mike Goallagher, and James Drumm.
Honorary Pallbearers are Terry Gallagher, Robert Whiteis, and Pat Patterson. A special Thankyou to Vista Care Hospice, for their loving care, dedication and support.
