Burwell T. Binns Born February 24th, 1920 at Wakenna, California and died August 16, 2007. Burwell moved to Roswell in 1924. His father Walter Binns, his mother Una Binns, his three brothers Winfred Binns, Billy Binns and Kenneth Binns, all preceded him in death. He attended Washington Avenue School, Roswell Senior High School, and graduated in the class of 1938 from the old Roswell High School.
He married Maudie Burton in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1944, and enjoyed a happy marriage for forty-nine years. His wife Maudie passed away in 1991.
Burwell was an insurance salesman for The Guarantee Reserve Life Insurance Company from 1947 1950. He owned and operated The Yellow Cab Taxi in Roswell for a number of years. Not a day went by during the 70s and 80s when he wasnt on the CB radio talking and joking under the name Tumbleweed. He was the distributor for the El Paso Times Newspaper for twenty-five years. He also delivered The Daily Racing Forms in Roswell for thirty years. He retired from the Classic News Agency, which he owned and managed from 1979 1989. After his retirement, he enjoyed playing bingo with his many friends. He never passed up an opportunity to tell one of his jokes, and there was always the sound of laughter when he was in a crowd.
Mr. Binns was of the Baptist faith and a member of The First Baptist Church of Roswell for seventy-five years.
He is survived by one son, Jim Binns and his wife Rita of Hemphill, Texas, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also survived by one sister, Elizabeth Gorman of Roswell, New Mexico and six nephews and several nieces.
At his request, Mr. Binns remains will be cremated. Contributions may be made to The Eastern New Mexico Hospital New Cancer Foundation in memory of his loving wife, Maudie Binns.
