Alpha Mitchell Stewart, formerly of Roswell, passed away on October 30, 2012 in Forest Grove, Oregon at the age of 87.
She was born December 20, 1924 in Daisetta, Texas to Sidney D. and Willie Mitchell and grew up in Manvel, Texas graduating from Alvin, Texas High School in 1943.
She met her husband, Lloyd D. Stewart, when he was stationed with the Coast Guard in Galveston, Texas. They were married on August 14, 1943 in Manvel, Texas after only a seven week courtship. L.D. was sent to the Pacific Theater during WWII and Alpha went home to live with her parents during that time.
Upon his return in 1946, L.D. and Alpha moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where they lived until moving with their three children to Roswell in 1958.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roswell and worked in the church library for over 40 years. She loved working in the library, sewing, making quilts for each of her grandchildren, but most of all, she loved Dr. Pepper.
Alpha went to live with her daughter, Linda Walls, in 2005 and eventually was transferred to a nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, L.D. Stewart, her brother, Dan Mitchell, and sister, Mildred Rex.
She is survived by one sister, Barbara Bass, and brotherinlaw, Harrell Bass, and sisterinlaw, Marie Mitchell.
She is also survived by her three children, Linda Walls, of St. Helens, OR, Laban Stewart and daughterinlaw, Brenda Stewart of Cedar Park, TX, Nancy Dutton and soninlaw, Col. Ron Dutton of Fayetteville, GA, six grandchildren, Michael Mason, Chad Stewart, Summer Wood, Casey Powell, Brent and Lance Dutton, as well as eight greatgrandchildren.
Viewing will be at Ballard Funeral Home on Sunday, November 4th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. The funeral service will be Monday, November 5th at 10:00 am at Ballard Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at South Park Cemetery in Roswell next to her husband, L.D., who preceded her death in 1977.
