Aloys R. Kuhn, 89, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Tuesday, February 5, 2013 in Roswell, NM.
Al was born June 20, 1923 in Hague, North Dakota to Daniel and Frances Stroh Kuhn. Growing up, he worked in his parents general store. After graduating from Assumption Abbey School in Richardton, North Dakota in 1942, he taught in a oneroom schoolhouse for a year before being drafted into the army. He served in the 141st AntiAircraft Artillery Gun Battalion in the European Theatre during WWII. Upon returning from the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Elsie Zent. While earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at North Dakota State University, he chipped ice in boxcars, washed windows on highrise buildings, and drove a taxi. After graduating in 1950, he ran a survey team for US Geological Service, leaving brass markers from Florida to Montana and Michigan to New Mexico. Al and Elsie made Alamogordo their hometown in 1958 when he went to work as a design engineer at Holloman Air Force Base. In 1978, he retired from 30 years of civil service and started a second career as a realtorbroker with Century 21 and, later, his own brokerage, Showrite Realty. He retired from this second career in 2004 to care for Elsie during her final illness. Al and Elsie were longtime members of St. Jude Parish. Al designed and built the new church in 1978 under the direction of Fr. Wilfred Diamond, SJ, parish administrator and beloved friend. Later, Al was instrumental in the building of the rectory and columbarium.
Survivors include two daughters Gretchen Phillips and husband Ron of Roswell, and Rebecca Golightly and partner Antonio Lipiz of Albuquerque a son Daniel Kuhn of Albuquerque nine grandchildren Jennifer Cheyanne Boyd and partner Jesse Adams of San Antonio, Jessica Haynes and husband Robin of Richmond TX, Robyn McCrea and husband Bob of Roswell, Katie Clingan and husband Vince of Washington D.C., Cletus Kuhn of Albuquerque, Mikahl BanwarthKuhn of Portland OR, Brynna BanwarthKuhn of Albuquerque, Justin Golightly and Lauren Golightly of Albuquerque four greatgrandchildren Kristen and Johnny Haynes of Richmond TX, and David and Anna Kate McCrea of Roswell and two sisters, Sr. Daniella Kuhn, SSND and Sr. Alene Kuhn, SSND of Mankato MN, and many nieces and nephews and their families. He also leaves dear and precious friends at Serenity Group and St. Judes Parish. He was preceded in death by his parents a daughter Elizabeth Ann Kuhn two brothers Pius and Gabe Kuhn six sisters Magdelina Nolz, Sr. George Kuhn SSND, Sr. Dora Kuhn SSND, Benita Mitzel, Sr. Mary Ann Welder OSB, and Lucille Richter Scheibley. Al lost Elsie, his beloved wife of 59 years, in 2005.
The family has entrusted the final care of their loved one to Ballard Funeral Home in Roswell, New Mexico. Catholic services will be conducted at St. Jude Parish in Alamogordo, New Mexico on Saturday, February 16. The rosary service will be at 1:15pm, and funeral mass will follow at 2:00pm with Fr. Tom Hossman SJ, as celebrant. Committal rite will follow in the St. Jude Columbarium. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
