Alice Rankin

Services are scheduled for 10:00 am Saturday, September 14, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, 200 N. Pennsylvania Ave, Roswell, NM for A. Joy Rankin, a resident of Roswell, New Mexico from 1957 to 2011. Burial has already occurred at South Park Cemetery in Roswell, NM.

Mrs. Rankin, 80, died Friday, September 6, 2013, in Las Cruces, NM. Alice Joy Baker Rankin, known to everyone as Joy, was born March 21, 1933 in Pueblo County, Colorado to Raymond Forest and Lucile Leanna Simpson Baker. She was married January 10, 1956 to Carroll Dean Rankin, who survives her.

Mrs. Rankin attended schools in Pueblo County and graduated from Northern Colorado University at Greeley, Colorado with a degree in elementary education. She received a masters degree in elementary education from Adams State College at Alamosa, Colorado, and did graduate work at Eastern New Mexico University and the University of Hawaii. She taught in the Roswell Independent School district for twentyfive years, the latter five in the Enrichment Department.

Mrs. Rankin was a member of First United Methodist Church of Roswell, where she was active in the United Methodist Womens groups and served on the scholarship committee for many years. She belonged to several education organizations including REA, NMEA, NEA, PTA, and the International Reading Association through which she attended world conferences in Australia, Hong Kong, and London. She was active in the Chaves County Extension Clubs and local square dance clubs.

Survivors include sons Ricky Dean Rankin, wife Shirley, of Tucson, Arizona, and their children Matt Chivari and Lauren Chivari, and Randy Ray Rankin, wife Deanna, grandsons Kyle and Ian Rankin all of Las Cruces, NM a sister Mrs. Neva Postlethwait, of Austin, Texas and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond Alan Baker and Norman Kent Baker, and a sister Lena Maxine Baker.
